SOUTH BANK TAEKWONDO: INFORMATION
INFORMATION: Competition
The style and techniques of Taekwondo makes it one of the most exciting and skilled combat sports to date. The fighting area is 10 m x 10 m either made of very hard rubber or sprung wood. Two fighters are given a colour, red (hong) or blue (chung) and face each other for a match consisting of 3 x 2 minute rounds with one minute rest between rounds. Whoever wins the contest must keep fighting throughout the tournament until he/she is knocked out or wins outright. Because taekwondo is a full-contact sport, protection is compulsory, I.e. Body protector, forearm pads, groin guard, gum shield (clear or white), head protector, shin pads and hand protectors must all be worn. There are four weight categories (see below).

There are four boundary judges placed on the boundary of each side of the ring, each with a blue and red button which is linked to an electronic scoreboard. If the taekwondo player scores a point, judges must press that colour button within one second for the player to be awarded with the point.
Hitting your opponent with legitimate techniques scores points, for example, contact to the target area (front of the body from the waist to the top of the head). Punches are not allowed to the face, however, kicks are allowed, which insures a skilled and exciting match.

Regulations, rules and point systems are constantly under review and may change form time to time and from competition to competition. Usually, it is one point for a body shot, two for a head kick and three for a jumping kick. If the player is struck to the head with a powerful blow, the referee can make her/him take a standing count of eight. Three standing counts in one match and you are out.
As well as the boundary judges and referee there is a head of court table which consists of three more officials including the time keeper. Also, each player has a coach with her/him at ringside. Safety is also very important with categorisation according to age, grade, sex and weight difference. There is also medical assistance and doctors at ringside to ensure safety.
Highly trained players are extremely skilful and ensure a fantastic spectator sport for those who do not wish to compete.
