BALHAE 18 B.C. - 660 A.D: Taekwondo was also an important part of the Baekjae Kingdom. Baekjae was a kingdom that developed south of the Hangang River in the vicinity of the present day capital of Seoul. The people of Baekjae were more peaceful than the ferocious warriors of Koguryo and moved south to avoid the threat of their northern rival. Baekjae was firmly established as a prosperous and civilized state, trading extensively with it’s overseas neighbours. In fact, Baekjae served as an important bridge for the transmission of mainland culture to Japan by passing on Buddhism, Chinese characters and political and social institutes.
Just as the Koguryo Kingdom had the Sonbae, the Baekjae had the Soo Sa to use for military protection. They also celebrated at Soo Byeok Ta festivals held in local villages and occasionally the winner of the contests became the leader of the village or a military general.
